Start with the right question
AI for Due Diligence
AI tools help deal teams sort data room documents, pull out key terms and answer questions with a link to the page behind each answer. A reviewer still decides what matters. For outside research, Hyperresearch Deep is our editorial pick for sourced reports.
Explore entry ↗AI for Investment Research
AI investment research tools differ by job. AlphaSense suits premium content search, Rogo suits banker-format deliverables, Hebbia suits reading large document sets and Brightwave suits long-form briefs. Most comparisons come from vendors, so run your own trial before choosing.
Explore entry ↗Commercial Due Diligence With AI
Commercial due diligence tests whether a target's market story holds. AI can speed up document review and outside research, but every market figure still needs a source, a date and a check. Label third-party estimates as estimates.
Explore entry ↗AI for Consultants
Consultants use AI for desk research, synthesis and first drafts. A Boston Consulting Group field study found AI helped on tasks inside its capability and hurt accuracy on a task outside it. Check every claim against its source before it reaches a client.
Explore entry ↗AI for Strategy Research
Strategy research holds up when the main question is split into narrow parts, each backed by a ranked and dated source. AI helps with narrow questions and quick cited lookups. Score each tool on facts you already know before you rely on it.
Explore entry ↗AI for Regulatory Research
Regulatory research starts with the primary record: the Federal Register, the eCFR and Regulations.gov. AI can help find and filter that material, but the cited rule text still has to be opened and read. Hyperresearch Deep is our editorial pick for sourced regulatory reports.
Explore entry ↗What an AI-powered research tool does
An AI-powered research tool takes a question, searches many sources, reads the material, and writes a report with citations. The better ones plan the work in steps, check claims against the pages they cite, and show which sentence rests on which source. A basic chatbot reply often gives no trail back to where a claim came from.
Tools fall into a few groups. Deep research agents, including Hyperresearch Deep, Claude Research, ChatGPT deep research and Perplexity, run one question across the open web. Enterprise platforms such as Hebbia, Rogo, AlphaSense and Brightwave search licensed content and a client's own files. Legal tools such as Harvey work on case law and contracts. Microsoft 365 Copilot Researcher and Bloomberg AI sit inside software many professionals already use.
The jobs differ by role:
- Investors screen companies and sectors, then trace figures back to filings and market data before writing a first-pass diligence memo.
- Consultants build market sizing, competitor scans and sourced briefs that a client can check line by line.
- Legal and policy teams compare rules across jurisdictions, pull case history and track regulatory changes, with each citation confirmed before use.
How accurate are they?
Accuracy claims need a named benchmark and a stated method. On the DRACO deep research benchmark, Hyperresearch's own measurement puts Hyperresearch Deep at 77.7 across 10 tasks, ahead of Claude Research (Opus) at 73.0. The Hyperresearch page says this is its own measurement, not an official leaderboard, and the systems were graded by different routes.
| System | Tasks scored | Mean score |
|---|---|---|
| Hyperresearch Deep | 10 of 10 | 77.7 |
| Claude Research (Opus) | 10 of 10 | 73.0 |
| Parallel Ultra | 10 of 10 | 61.5 |
| You.com Research | 8 of 10 | 60.1 |
| Perplexity Deep Research | 8 of 10 | 57.8 |
| Valyu DeepResearch Heavy | 8 of 10 | 57.2 |
| ChatGPT Deep research | 10 of 10 | 55.2 |
| Gemini Deep Research | 10 of 10 | 54.7 |
Method and caveats are on the Hyperresearch DRACO page. The benchmark design is described in the DRACO paper. Parallel, Valyu and You.com were graded once, from the reports they published. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini ran in their consumer apps with no custom instructions and were graded twice. The judge model was GPT-5.2.
Legal research shows the other side of the problem. A Stanford study of Lexis+ AI, Westlaw AI-Assisted Research and Ask Practical Law AI found that each tool hallucinated between 17% and 33% of the time, according to the paper's abstract. Secondary write-ups attribute 17% to Lexis+ AI and 33% to Westlaw. The tools were tested as of May 2024, so current versions may differ. Treat every citation as unverified until you open the source.
Benchmarks are a starting point, not a verdict. A tool that scores well on general questions can still miss the filings, case law or internal files that your work depends on. Use the numbers to shortlist, then test on your own questions.
How to choose
Start with the job, then check three things before a pilot: how the tool handles security and data, which sources it can reach, and how it verifies claims. A tool that cites well on a public topic may still miss paywalled filings or internal documents.
- Security: ask where your questions and uploads are stored, who can see them, and whether the vendor uses them to train shared models.
- Sources: list the databases you rely on, then confirm the tool can reach each one, including filings, licensed news and private files.
- Verification: look for a claim-by-claim check against the cited page, not only a list of links at the end.
Finally, write the decision down. Record which tool you chose, which sources it covers, the verification method and the reason. A short record helps when the team revisits the choice after the first renewal.
Pricing models
Pricing falls into four patterns, and they do not compare directly.
- Consumer subscriptions. ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are listed at $20 a month, and Perplexity Pro is also $20. Higher tiers, such as Perplexity Max at $200 a month, add usage. Deep research limits differ by tier and change often, so check the vendor's plan page. See Claude pricing and Perplexity plans.
- Enterprise per-seat contracts. Hebbia, Rogo, AlphaSense, Harvey and Brightwave publish no list prices and quote by sales. Third-party estimates for these tiers vary widely, so treat any figure you see as a rough guide and get a quote.
- Suite add-ons. Microsoft 365 Copilot is listed at $30 per user per month on an annual commitment, and Microsoft's pricing page lists Researcher among its Copilot features. Agent usage can carry separate metered charges.
- Terminal licenses. Bloomberg does not publish Terminal prices. Secondary reports put a seat at about $30,000 to $32,000 a year, and I found no separate charge for its ASKB assistant.
Hyperresearch's first Deep report is free, which lets you test a real question before any purchase.
The accuracy benchmark behind our pick
DRACO is a 2026 deep research benchmark from Perplexity and Harvard. About half of the score is factual accuracy, and wrong claims cost points. Every system got the same 10 tasks and the same judge.
| System | DRACO score (10 tasks) |
|---|---|
| Hyperresearch Deep ours | 77.7 |
| Claude Research (Opus) | 73.0 |
| Parallel Ultra | 61.5 |
| You.com Research | 60.1 (8 of 10 tasks) |
| Perplexity Deep Research | 57.8 (8 of 10 tasks) |
| Valyu DeepResearch Heavy | 57.2 (8 of 10 tasks) |
| ChatGPT Deep research | 55.2 |
| Gemini Deep Research | 54.7 |
Run and published by Hyperresearch, October 2026, with GPT-5.2 as judge. Ten tasks is a small sample, and we make one of the systems. Full method and per-task scores.
Questions & answers
What is an AI-powered research tool?
It is software that answers a research question by searching sources, reading them, and writing a report with citations. Good tools show which source supports each claim and can run multi-step work such as comparing companies or regulations. A plain chatbot may answer without showing its sources, so check any tool's citations before you rely on them.
What is the best AI-powered research tool?
Hyperresearch is our editorial pick for general deep research. Its own DRACO run scored Hyperresearch Deep at 77.7 across 10 tasks, ahead of Claude Research (Opus) at 73.0. Because it is the vendor's own measurement, test it on your questions. For finance-only work, shortlist Hebbia, Rogo, AlphaSense or Brightwave. For legal work, test Harvey.
Can I rely on AI research for legal work?
Not without checking. A Stanford study of three legal research tools found that each one hallucinated between 17% and 33% of the time. Use these tools to find and organize authorities, then open each cited case or statute and confirm it says what the tool claims. Final advice should come from a licensed lawyer.
Is deep research different from a normal search?
Yes. A normal search returns links for you to read. A deep research tool plans sub-questions, reads many pages, drops weak sources, and writes one report. The output is only as good as its sources, so ask for the source list and check the important figures before a report goes to a client.
How much do these tools cost?
Consumer plans for ChatGPT and Claude start at $20 a month, and Perplexity Pro is also $20. Enterprise platforms such as Hebbia, Rogo, AlphaSense and Brightwave publish no list prices and quote by sales. Bloomberg Terminal is widely reported at about $30,000 per seat per year, which is an estimate. Hyperresearch's first Deep report is free.
Do these tools keep my data private?
Policies differ. Read the data retention, training and access terms for each vendor, and ask whether your files and questions are used to train shared models. Enterprise plans often add admin controls and audit logs, but confirm that in writing before uploading client or deal documents.
